Softball club set for season but needs umps

Several new faces on the 100 Mile minor softball executive

Kari Edle has been elected new president of the South Cariboo Minor Softball Association.

Softball season is a long way off, but the South Cariboo Minor Softball Association is ready to play ball.

The organization held its annual general meeting recently and brought in some fresh faces.

Kari Edle signed on as president, replacing longtime club member Jodi Thomson who will be concentrating her efforts on coaching the Zone 8 2012 BC Summer Games U14 girls’ softball team. Greg Edle and Kyle Moore share the vice-president’s seat, and Shayla Edlund takes on the position of secretary/treasurer. Corrine Moore is registrar.

“We had a pretty good turnout with lots of people wanting to pitch in,” says Kari.

“I’m feeling optimistic it will be a good year. With the changes made, we’ve got new blood and new ideas to get membership coming in.”

Last year, the club registered more than 100 players.

She says there will be a focus on fundraising in the coming season with the goal of upgrading the playing fields.

“Currently, they’re dirt and we’d like to see clay fields. They’ve done a fabulous job of redoing the fields over the last couple of years, but there’s definite room for improvement.”

The club is expecting to see a shortage of umpires next season and members would like to see new people take an interest. Kari says they need more umps in order to host ball tournaments.

“Umpires are always a problem. A few have let their certification expire, and this year, we’ll be losing a junior ump to school.”

Anyone interested in becoming certified as an umpire can contact Kari at 250-395-2914.

Softball registration for youths aged four-18 will take place Feb. 1 and 25 at A&W.
