A pair of South Surrey-White Rock Minor Softball Association squads returned home from Nanaimo earlier this month with medals.
The South Surrey-White Rock Chicks With Bats peewee C team scooped a gold medal, after winning five of seven games en route to a championship-game win, while the SSWR Thunder ’98 claimed silver in the peewee B tournament.
The tournament was the first of the season for the Chicks With Bats squad, which got strong pitching performances from Sam Schneider and Natalie Parsons, as well as solid catching from Berlyn Seslja and Summer Rasmussen.
Defensively, the team was led by Jaimee Wozniak, Coco Wiebe and Keyla Ferris, as well as Danaca McCaffrey and Skylar Opdam.
Outfielders Adriana Amyot and Paris Thiesson also played well all weekend.
The Thunder also played well, and had a tough road to the finals on Sunday, playing five straight games to earn a berth in the title tilt.
In the finals, the Thunder fell to the Langford Lightning 6-5.
Among the tourney highlights were strong pitching performances from Rebekah Taylor, Natasha Houston, Sam Nikl and Rachel Cherniwchan. Cherniwchan also added a home run to pace the offence.
Thunder’s Ashlee Thacker was named the winner of the tournament’s Spirit Award, for being one of the team’s most inspirational players.
