The Annual Gitxsan Open Best Ball Golf Tournament was held last Saturday and organizers said it was another success this year with a solid turnout, decent weather and a good prizes.

Organizer Richard Sampson said the tournament’s success is largely due to the help of many volunteers and financial support from a variety of companies.

“Without the generosity of our sponsors and the hard work and dedication of all our volunteers, this tournament would not be possible,” he told the players after the dinner at the clubhouse on Saturday night. “It’s great to see so many people enjoying themselves and we are really glad we can do this every year.”

Everyone who played in the tournament was guaranteed a prize providing they performed in a skit or song revolved around a Gitxsan word after the dinner.

Each team of four was given a word at the beginning of the tournament and they had the course of the day to come up with a way to use the word.

“This is always one of our favourite parts of the tournament,” Sampson said. “It’s always entertaining and it’s a good way to share our a bit of our culture.”

In addition to the prizes for all those who performed, there were three top finish prizes.

There was a tie for first with the winning score this year being eight under and the first prize going to the team with the best score on the back nine.

There were also prizes for three closest to the pin holes and a women’s and men’s longest drive.

The three $20,000 hole in one prizes along with the free car hole were not claimed again this year giving players something to aspire to next year.
