The South Island Knights won both ends of a doubleheader against the Powell River Regals as the senior AA hockey team played its first-ever home games at Fuller Lake Arena on Saturday and Sunday.

The Knights edged the Regals 4-3 on Saturday evening, then ran away with a 9-0 victory on Sunday morning.

The Powell River team was short a few players on the road trip, and Knights player/coach Jon Hollett acknowledged that the team’s lack of bodies may have played a role in Sunday’s blowout.

“Probably,” he said. “After a very physical game Saturday night.”

A.J. Dzhevelekyan had two goals on Saturday night, while Jackson Wilson  potted the eventual game winner, and Tanner Wiersma also scored.

On Sunday, the Knights got two goals each from Blair Murphy and Kelyn Opel, while Dan Currie posted the shutout.

“It was a good start to our first home weekend as a team,” Hollett said. “We hope to build on it and bring more exciting hockey to the community.”

The Knights will play their next games at home against North Island on Nov. 26 and 27, at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
