South Okanagan athletes earn medals at B.C. Games

Trio of South Okanagan athletes sweep the medals in U17 boys moguls competition

A handful of South Okanagan athletes returned from the 2018 B.C. Winter Games with medals.

Apex Freestyle Ski Club U17 boys swept the moguls podium with Ethan Phillips (Kaleden) winning gold, Alexander Henderson (Penticton) taking silver and Nate Parsons (Kaleden) earning the bronze medal.

Special Olympics basketball players Melissa Andrews, Anton Evans and Troy Schattenkirk all helped the Thompson-Okanagan Zone 2 team take the silver medal.

Summerland karate athlete Jaydon Davis won a gold in the intermediate Kumite 2 Boys (156 cm-plus) and a bronze in the intermediate Kumite boys open weight. Davis was also part of the bronze medal winning Thompson-Okanagan Zone 2 team in the boys team Kumite and silver medal winning boys team Kata.

Also in karate, Keremeos resident Marlaina Gumpert helped the Thompson-Okanagan Zone 2 to a silver medal in the girls’ team Kata competition.

Penticton — Jaras Grant/skiing-alpine – 15th in giant slalom single run, 10th in giant slalom two-run and fifth in slalom 2-run, Samantha Lawlor/skiing-alpine – 30th in giant slalom two-run, Molly Raymond/skiing-alpine – 24th in giant slalom two-run, Alexander Henderson/skiing-freestyle – fifth in U17 slopestyle, Sasha Lovell/skiing-freestyle – 12th in U14 slopestyle, 11th in U14 moguls and 13th in big air, Madison Boemer/snowboard – eighth in snowboard cross, Alexandra Lovell/snowboarding – fourth in snowboard cross and fifth in slopestyle, Kehler Smith/archery – sixth in two-day aggregate boys recurve, Zach Kuechle and Ryan Trip/curling – fourth, Jade Lowenstein/Judo (results not available) and Benjamin Atherton/karate – fifth in intermediate Kumite 2 (156 cm-plus).

Kaleden — Nate Parsons/skiing-freestyle – 12th in U17 slopestyle, 11th in U17 big air and Ethan Phillips/skiing-freestyle – sixth in U17 slopestyle, fifth in U17 big air.

Keremeos and Cawston — Marlaina Gumpert/karate – fifth in intermediate Kumite 2 girls (157 cm -plus) and Carter Crow/archery – fifth in two-day aggregate boys compound.

Osoyoos — Jacob Campol/archery – fifth in tw0-day aggregate boys barebow.

Summerland — Angela Boerboom/archery – fifth in two-day aggregate girls barrow, Matthew Lowery and Jacob Martin/curling – fourth and Ethan Morf/skiing-freestyle – 11th in U14 slopestyle, ninth in U14 moguls and 11th in U14 big air.
