South Surrey rugby sides compete at sevens provincials

The seven-a-side tournament featured the 16 top teams from across the province, including the Earl Marriott Mariners and Elgin Park Orcas.

A pair of South Surrey high-school rugby squads hit the pitch in Victoria last weekend, at BC Rugby High School Girls Sevens Championships.

The seven-a-side tournament featured the 16 top teams from across the province, including the Earl Marriott Mariners and Elgin Park Orcas.

The Mariners, competing in Pool D, finished the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 2-1 win-loss record, while the Orcas were 1-2 in Pool A.

EMS opened the tournament Friday with a 27-0 loss to Kamloops’ Valleyview Secondary before rebounding with a 46-0 victory over Kelowna’s Mt. Boucherie Secondary, and a narrow 20-19 win over North Vancouver’s Handsworth Secondary.

In the first playoff round, Marriott fell 39-5 to Brentwood, and in a consolation-round game Saturday, lost 26-10 to Cowichan.

Elgin Park, meanwhile, opened round-robin play with a 46-0 win over Duchess Park of Prince George, before losing its final two games, to Brentwood and Edward Milne secondaries.

In the playoffs, Elgin won its first game, 34-5 over Mt. Boucherie, but were bounced from contention Saturday after a 22-14 loss to Belmont Secondary.

The championship was won by Oak Bay, which defeated Williams Lake’s Lake City Secondary 38-0 in the final tilt.
