The Hazelton Spartans junior boys basketball team played in Smithers on Saturday in a playday hosted by Bulkley Valley Christian School and finished 2-0.
Their first game was against Houston Christian school and they came away with a 35-24 victory. Leading point getters were Brandon Johnson with 15 and Colton Murrell with 14.
In their second game they outshot the hosting team, BVCS, 33-9. However, six minutes into the game Johnson was going for a rebound and seemed to come down on a bad angle twisting his ankle and possibly breaking his leg. He was still awaiting X-ray’s as far as the coach knew.
Leading point getters for the second game were Ryan Wright with 14 and Murrell with nine.
“Everyone did really well and played as a team,” teacher sponsor Marlis Zurbrugg said. “The coach, Richard Sampson, and I were very pleased with how the team played overall.”
This was the team’s second playday of the year with their first being held the previous weekend when they hosted and finished with a record of 1-1. Their next tournament will be in Smithers on January 28th.
