Special Olympics give tykes an active start

Special Olympics B.C. Nanaimo is launching its new Active Start program this Monday (Jan. 14.

Special Olympics athletes can achieve great things, and it can start at any age. Special Olympics B.C. Nanaimo is launching its new Active Start program this Monday (Jan. 14), aimed at children ages two through six with intellectual disabilities.

“We have our traditional sport programs here in town, but what we really wanted to do was focus on offering something for this age group,” said Bobby Debrone, a manager of community development with Special Olympics B.C.

Two team leaders from Vancouver Island University will work with the children in sports and movement and balance exercises each week at Quarterway Elementary School.
