The Spectrum Thunder football team is on the cusp of making history, sitting just one win away from making the playoffs for the first time.

The Thunder hosted and defeated the Howe Sound Sounders, 13-8, in a ‘mud bowl’ on Saturday. With the win the Thunder are now 3-2, including exhibition, and 1-1 in B.C. High School Football’s Tier II regular season.

“It was just so muddy, the field is in terrible shape at this time and that was a very wet week to say the least,” said head coach Darren Vaux.

“The weather takes away the big plays, and the game came down to running. It’s also that we’re winning in different ways, and not relying on one dimension.”

Grade 12 middle linebacker Anthony Colyn, who was an original Grade 9 player from the program’s startup four years ago, was a beast on Saturday and did a great job for Spectrum, Vaux said.

Another bright light for Spectrum was Grade 10 Harrison Kuromi, who stepped in at running back and scored the team’s first touchdown on Saturday.

“Kuromi lined up at running back and managed to rip off a 70-yard TD up the middle,” Vaux said.

Spectrum then scored on its next possession when Grade 10 quarterback Chris Starck connected with receiver Riley Wilson along the sideline. Wilson scampered all the way for a 70-yard touchdown reception.

The Thunder can qualify for the playoffs with a win over Timberline on Thursday, or when they travel to Eric Hamber in Vancouver on Monday for a makeup game that was cancelled during the early October storms.

Rams tackle Mouat

At the AAA level, the Mount Douglas Rams hosts a playoff game Friday versus W.J. Mouat of Abbotsford, 1 p.m. on the all-weather Goudy Turf in Langford. It’s a rematch of the 2011 AAA Subway Bowl, which was the Rams’ first of four AAA provincial titles in five years.

The Rams ended the 2016 regular season at 3-3 after they suffered a 34-28 loss to Carson Graham. It was Carson Graham’s first win of the regular season, and the first time the senior Rams have lost three straight in at least seven years.
