Engage Sport North is bringing its second-ever coach, athlete and sport leadership camp to Williams Lake in November.
The two-day course will take place at Thompson Rivers University on Nov. 26 and 27 and feature Austin Hinchey, captain of the Canadian Men’s National Sitting Volleyball Team, said executive director Leslie Wirth during a presentation to city council at its regular meeting Tuesday.
“Austin will give the keynote presentation and give a seated volleyball session that weekend as well,” she said.
Other aspects of the camp will include workshops on sports mental training, athlete physical testing and consultation, advancement for women in sports, managing conflict and a sports medicine concussion course.
Wirth said the organization serves communities in Northern B.C. from 100 Mile House to the Yukon border and from Haida Gwaii to the Alberta border.
Incorporated in 1994 as Pacific Sport Northern B.C., the non-profict organization changed its name to Engage Sport North two weeks ago.
“We have the mandate to increase physical literacy skills, physical activity levels and specialized training skills to youth athletes,” Wirth told council, noting they presently have offices in Prince George and Fort St. John.
The cost of the camp is $50 for athletes and $100 for everyone else.
Wirth also encourages people to consider nominating people for the Fan the Flames Awards, which will be presented at a banquet and gala in Prince George on Feb. 9, 2017.
“You probably have some athletes, coaches and officials in this community that are probably deserving of those awards,” Wirth told council.
