Wurtele third in Ironman Chattanooga

Vernon’s Trevor Wurtele used his second fastest bike time ever to capture third at the inaugural Ironman Chattanooga Tennessee on Sunday.

Wurtele, who now lives in Kelowna and trains in the U.S., completed the 116-mile bike in four hours, 37 minutes and 52 seconds, and followed that with a 2:59 marathon. He was ninth out of the water.

Matt Hansen of the U.S. used a blazing 2:47 marathon to take the win, while fellow American Daniel Bretscher grabbed second spot.

Trevor and wife Heather will now compete in the Ironman World Championships, Oct. 11, in Kona, Hawaii.

Royals brush back Talons

The Vernon Christian School Royals outlasted the Eagle River Talons of Sicamous 3-2 (19-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-11, 15-11) in exhibition senior girls volleyball play Tuesday night.

Rebecca Vanderdeen collected 14 kills, backed by 11 aces from Jasmine Hofsink, for the Royals, who are in the 44-team UBC Okanagan Heat Invitational starting today.

The Fulton Maroons defeated George Elliott Coyotes 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-19) in exhibition play Tuesday night in front of a rowdy Fulton crowd.

Nazarena Wurz, Megan Rouault and Brittany Skrenek led the Maroons with six kills apiece. Nicole Olson ran the Fulton attack, while Erin Sakamoto recorded seven digs as defensive specialist.

“We’ve only had five practices so there is a lot of room for improvement and there is great potential,” said Fulton coach Sharon Shaigec. “Our team serve-receive must improve in order for us to compete with the top teams in the province.”

The Maroons take on AAAA Mt. Boucherie Bears of West Kelowna, AAA NorKam Saints of Kamloops and G.W. Graham Grizzlies of Chilliwack in pool play at the UBCO tourney.

Stars fall 10-5 to Kelowna

Tage Kineshanko supplied 2+1 as the Lumby Stars lost 10-5 to the Kelowna Rockets 6-4 in Pee Wee Tier 4 hockey play Saturday at Pat Duke Memorial Arena.

Sponsored by Green Velvet Lawn and Tree Care and Kineshanko Logging, the Stars got stellar netminding from Parker Stadnyk in the first 10 minutes with Kelowna pressing.

Kelowna led 2-0 after 20 minutes before Conner Seehaver put the Stars on the board on a series of nice passing between Mason Robinson and Kineshanko.

The Rockets added another but Noah Clarke responded, assisted by Seehaver and d-man Peter Romailler Jr. before the Rockets pumped in two quick goals before the second period buzzer.

Kineshanko netted a backhander, assisted by Seehaver. Kineshanko added another at 11:10 of the third with assists to Linden Catt and Seehaver to make the score 6-4. Kelowna added a pair before Robinson blasted in a point shot.

Poulsen takes BCHL honours

Merritt Centennials’ defenceman Shane Poulsen has been named the BCHL Player of the Week.

Poulsen helped the Cents to a pair of wins and was instrumental in the team allowing just two goals. The towering Kamloops native had 1+1 in a 5-2 road win in Salmon Arm. He then set up the winner the next night as part of a three-assist effort in a 5-0 home win over Penticton Vees.

Quotable…

“I have the greatest job in the world. Only one person can have it. You have shortstops on other teams – I’m not knocking other teams – but there’s only one shortstop on the Yankees.” – Derek Jeter.
