Johnson swings B.C. PGA payday
Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club pro Myles Johnson finished in a four-way tie for fifth place to earn $1,337 at the Titleist/FootJoy PGA of B.C. Championship Wednesday at Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops.
In a field of 85 pros, Johnson followed his opening round 2-over-par 74 with scores of 67 and 70 to finish at 5-under (211).
Lindsay Bernakevitch (Shaughnessy G&CC) claimed first place and $6,250 with a 12-under 204 (69-65-70). Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry ($4,500) was runner-up at 11-under (68-68-69).
Canoe Creek’s Jesse Crowe finished tied for 24th at 4-over (72-71-77-220) to collect $330.
Hillview’s Keith Vandenbrink ended tied for 27th at 77-74-70-221, pocketing $292.
Justin Baillargeon and Shannon Glenesk, both of Vernon G&CC, finished in 52nd and 74th respectively.
MacDonald stones Salmonbellies
Vernon’s Brodie MacDonald recorded 43 saves for first star as the Langley Thunder iced the New Westminster Salmonbellies 8-6 in Game 4 of the Western Lacrosse Association finals Tuesday night at the Langley Events Centre.
Home-floor advantage is proving to be huge in this best-of-seven series, with neither team dropping a game in its rink.
The Thunder rolled early in the first period as Andrew Potter (1+2), Patrick Saunders, Alex Turner and Athan Iannucci (2+2) fired four unanswered singles to take the lead.
Jordan McBride and Martin Cummings replied for the Salmonbellies late in the first.
The two teams traded singles in the second frame, and continued to alternate goals in the third, with Langley’s Rob Van Beek burying an insurance marker with 1:02 to play.
Game 5 went Thursday night at Queen’s Park Arena in New Westminster, with Game 6 set for Saturday night in Langley. If necessary, Game 7 would go Monday at Queen’s Park.
The series winner hosts the Canadian championship Mann Cup, Sept. 7-15.
Adanacs begin title defence tonight
The Coquitlam Adanacs will put their Minto Cup national junior A lacrosse title on the line in a best-of-three final beginning tonight in Okotoks, Alta.
Their opponent – the Whitby Warriors of Ontario, who clinched a berth in the final with an 8-4 semifinal win over the host Okotoks Raiders Wednesday.
The A’s, featuring Vernon Re/Max Tiger grad Josh Phillips in net, went 3-0 in round-robin play, capped by a 12-1 thrashing of Okotoks Tuesday to advance to the final.
Vipers announce exhibition schedule
The Vernon Vipers are hosting their annual Blue and White intra-squad game Sept. 3, 6 p.m. at the Westbild Centre.
Admission is by donation, with proceeds being sent to the Somalia Relief Foundation.
The Vipers will gear up for the 2011-12 B.C. Hockey League regular season with a pair of home exhibition games, the first against the Westside Warriors, Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. They host the Trail Smoke Eaters Friday, Sept. 16, 7 p.m.
Vernon also has two exhibition tilts on the road – Sept. 10 against the Merritt Centennials, and Sept. 13 at Westside.
