Pope pockets U14 shutout

Vernon’s Caleb Pope was spectacular in net as the Thompson Okanagan FC iced Vancouver Mountain 1-0 in B.C. EA Sports Premier Under 14 Girls Soccer League play Sunday.

Sarah Dewar (Kelowna) scored in the 12th minute with a left foot kick from 40 yards out as the U14s earned their first win of the young season.

In U14 boys play Saturday, Vernon keeper Tatum Macaulay made several great saves in TOFC’s 1-0 loss to Mountain.

The U14s rebounded Saturday to shut down Vancouver Fusion 3-0 on goals by Kamen Wimbleton (Kelowna), Jared Quibell (Vernon) and Ethan Beselt (West Kelowna). Vernon’s Conner Glennon set up two goals and Macaulay made a fantastic late save, guiding the ball over the bar.

Sigalet swings unanimous decision

A trio of Vernon Boxing Club fighters earned one win, one draw and one loss at an amateur card last weekend at Griffins Boxing and Fitness in North Vancouver.

Joe Sigalet pounded his way to a unanimous decision over Griffins’ Adam Bartleman in a three-round heavyweight clash.

“Joe’s vicious right head and body hooks took the fight out of a very strong and game Adam as Joe rocked his opponent several times over three hard rounds,” said Vernon coach Brian Jones.

In super heavyweight action, Frankie Jacobs flashed some surprisingly fast hands in battling to a draw against Griffins’ Dennis Musto.

Luke Anderson fought bravely in losing to skilled Griffins’ fighter Thomas Sams in a youth middleweight bout.

Angels torch Heat

The Vernon Angels got even and more by crushing the Kelowna Heat in Under 19 girls fastball play Tuesday night at Grahame Park.

The Heat silenced the Angels 12-5 in the Kelowna Icebreaker tourney last weekend.

Sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion #25, and coached by Dave Munk, the Angels received sweet pitching from Shelby Munk and Dallyce Edwards.

Edwards jumpstarted the Angels’ attack with a two-run single in the first inning when Dayna Hanley, Lexie Edwards and Keara Crandlemire all touched home plate. Crandlemire smacked a two-run double in the second inning, with Morgan Vanderzwan and Munk both stroking singles and runs coming from Vanderzwan, Danica Jensen, Caitlin Rolke, Hanley and Munk.

Vanderzwan, Edwards and Ally Crandlemire all produced RBI-singles in the third, scoring Rhianne Busslinger, Daina Bader, Edwards and Jensen.

In the fourth, Mikayla Head, Vanderzwan and Dallyce and Lexie Edwards all recorded RBI-singles. Munk, Head, Busslinger and Dallyce Edwards scored.

In Squirts play Wednesday night at High Noon Park in Kelowna, Vernon Caufields Engraving Panthers fell 15-6 to the Kelowna Storm.

Pitchers Timara Jensen and Kass Bradley each registered a strikeout. Bradley had a hit, Asia Graham scored two runs and Camryn Beer and Emma Lochhead both scored a run.
