The All Native Basketball Tournament (ANBT) board continues to meet and make preparations for the February event.
On Dec. 13, ANBT announced on Facebook this years Hall of Fame inductees. The four chosen are: Denise Wilson (Metlakatla, B.C.), Matt Carle (Hydaburg, AK), Joey Nelson (Prince Rupert Trojans) and Frank Parnell.
The board will also introduced a new contest to the tournament, sure to garner excitement: the first slam dunk competition.
More preparations will come in the next couple months in advance of the Feb. 12-18 tournament.
Rainmakers make the rankings
Some solid play by two Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS) Rainmakers teams lately has reaped rewards.
Last week, British Columbia High School Boys Basketball released its regular list of provincial rankings for high school teams. The junior boys basketball team made it into the honourable mentions, just outside of the top 10. The boys are 4-0 to start the season.
The senior boys also got a shoutout as an honourable mention. The Rainmakers have started the year 3-3 in games at home, in Kitsilano and Vancouver.
Shames Mountain (finally) opens
For the first time this season, area residents can swoosh down Shames Mountain. After some delay, the ski hill opened last weekend.
Thanks to a 15cm dumping of snow on the weekend, Shames opened most of its runs and all of its lifts. The runs not opened were: Panhandler, Shooter and Deliverance Road.
On Monday morning, the co-op announced it will be open daily until Jan. 2, excluding Christmas day. Lifts will be operational from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Boxing Day Winter Classic
While most sports organizations have taken a break for the Christmas holidays, there is one tradition that will carry on.
On Boxing Day, the annual rugby matchup will take place. The game will be played on the CHSS field at 2 p.m. rain, shine or otherwise.
