Skating Club hosts jamboree
The Prince Rupert Skating Club will put on its annual West Area Jamboree this weekend, Feb. 24-26. Skaters from as far away as Smithers take part in the event.
Various events will take place at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre arena on Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Peewees prep for provincials
The Seawolves played an exhibition game against Kitimat on Feb. 12, winning 5-3.
“We had a standout performance from both goalkeepers, Jacob Gordon and Ellie Lowe. Gavin Magnusson also played a solid defensive game, showing a lot of confidence,” coach Vince Aceto said.
Noah Aceto paced the team with a pair of goals, while Kade Jones, Logan Hughes and Jordan Mack also scored. The Seawolves got two assists from Kaiden Munro and Jonathan Pirillo, while Jones, Hughes, Samantha Wiley and Mitch Mann also chipped in.
The game will go towards the Seawolves prepping for provincials in Fernie in March, after the team automatically won the zone, thanks to Houston and Vanderhoof dropping out.
Junior girls fall in zones
The junior girls basketball team at Charles Hays Secondary School did not have the same success other CHSS basketball teams have had at zones.
Playing in zones in Smithers, the girls ultimately fell to Smithers Secondary School by five points in the second game of a best-of-three series.
The first game wasn’t as close. The Rainmakers lost 52-31 to SSS Gryphons.
On Saturday, the teams met up again, with the Rainmakers coming within five points of forcing a third and deciding game, but the Gryphons held them off to take the banner.
Only one team has yet to battle for their zones, and that’s the senior boys team, which will host the tournament this weekend at CHSS.
