All Native is back
The games are back. Prince Rupert’s marquee event of the year debuts on Sunday with opening ceremonies, performed by the Ahousaht Soul Shakers.
On Sunday at noon, the women kick off a packed week of games as more than 50 teams vie for the women’s, intermediates, seniors and masters championships.
The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on Feb. 17 at 8:00 p.m., honouring Frank Parnell, Joey Nelson, Matt Carle and Denise Wilson.
Another highlight of the week is a slam dunk competition, which is sure to garner excitement.
All four championship games will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Serving up nothing but squash
It’s time to Feel the Love. The Racquet Centre is hosting its annual squash tournament, which attracts players all the way from Burns Lake.
The event takes place from Feb. 17-19 and costs $45 per person, which includes three guaranteed games, a prime rib banquet and a souvenir hoodie.
All levels of players are welcome, from beginners on up to advanced players.
The tournament will also include a fun ‘Dingles’ event, which combines doubles and singles squash. The way it works is that there are two players on each side, but each team only has one racquet and they have to pass it to each other after every shot.
“More laughing goes on than good squash,” said Lee Beal, tournament representative.

Peewees close out season
The Peewee Rep Seawolves suffered through a rough regular season finale in Kitimat. Already with Mitchell Mann and Noah Aceto not dressed, the team was in an even worse spot, losing Hayden Wilson and Jonathan Pirillo to injury.
Kitimat won the game 10-2. Coach Vince Aceto said with three defencemen out, a bright spot on the back end was Jorian Mack.
“He logged lots of ice time and played a competitive game,” Aceto said.
The Peewees now prepare for their zone championships which will be in Rupert from Feb. 18-20.
