Running season takes off

The Rupert Runners have hosted a fun run already this year — and the Learn to Run program has been in full swing since Valentine’s Day — but the first race of the season is creeping up.

Kicking off the racing season on April 9 will be a half marathon, with a twist: it’s a two-person relay, which each runner racing 10.5km. There will also be an 8km race.

In-person registration and race package pickupwill take place at the Lester Centre on April 8 from 10 a.m. until noon and on the day of the race from 12 to 12:45 p.m. The half marathon starts at 1 p.m. and the 8km at 2 p.m.

Refreshments and an award ceremony will be available at the Lester Centre after the race.

The cost is $30 for individuals or $60 for two-person relay teams. An extra $5 will be charged to register the day of the event. To register in advance, go to rupertrunners.com.

Call for help

Prince Rupert Youth Soccer Association (PRYSA) opens its season next week as practices begin, but there’s still a need for volunteers.

Almost all divisions need more volunteer coaches, said head division coordinator Patricia DeMille.

“We have some amazing women who have volunteered to coordinate and without them and volunteer coaches, the league couldn’t run,” she said.

Division coordinators are still needed for U5, U6 and U12 girls, in particular, but volunteers are needed in other areas as well in order for the divisions not to be delayed.

“Our program depends on volunteers. Please consider getting involved to make this season a success,” DeMille said.

PRYSA will also be putting on coaching clinics on Saturday and Sunday, provided there is enough registration. The clinics are for anyone who is coaching or assisting this year or who just wants practical soccer knowledge to coach in the future.
