Skeena River Relay
The 142 km Skeena River Relay race from Prince Rupert to Terrace takes place this Saturday, June 3. All 30 teams have registered, with five to 10 people on each team. Two-time defending champions Out for a Rip from Thornhill will look to defend their title that they won in 2016 and 2015.
Race packages can be picked up at the Crest Hotel from 3 – 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2 and runners will begin Stage One of the race at 7 a.m. from the Lester Centre of the Arts, with an awards gathering scheduled for the Terrace Curling Rink on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is included for all relay participants.
Rise ‘N Grind Skate Contest
A free skateboarding trick contest makes its return to the Prince Rupert Skate Park for its 12th year, this coming Sunday, June 4.
The Rise ‘N Grind Freestyle Skate Competition is back, hosted by Loaded Sports. Open to all ages and genders, the competition has different themes, courses and obstacles for participants to take part in.
“It’s mostly going to be people trying their best tricks and being judged on their best runs,” Steve Newman said. Judges will be on hand to evaluate the skateboarders, and all competitors must wear a helmet while riding. Those under 19 need a signature from a parent or guardian to compete.
First Aid attendants will be on hand at the park, as will a couple speakers broadcasting some tunes.
Competitors can win prizes such as clothing, stickers, backpacks, skateboard decks and more, donated from industry sponsors.
Free registration begins on Sunday at noon at the skate park, and you can pre-register at Loaded Sports beforehand as well. The event starts at 1 p.m., with a rain-out date scheduled for Sunday, June 18 if the conditions are too wet. ‘Eclectic’ dance show kicks off
Dance Academy of Prince Rupert will finish off its successful season with two different shows, titled ‘Eclectic’ this weekend.
Saturday, June 3 brings the first to the Lester Centre of the Arts stage at 7 p.m. and a second, different show begins on Sunday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at the Lester Centre.
Tickets for each performance are available at the Lester Centre or Cook’s Jewellers, with discounts offered to children and two-show combos.
