Sports brief stories from around the Prince Rupert area.

All-Native basketball qualifiers

This week, several all-native basketball teams will have their shot at qualifying for the February event.

The qualifying tournament will happen at the Russell Gamble gymnasium from Wednesday through Saturday.

The Intermediate and Women’s division have six teams competing, while the Senior Mens has five.

The intermediate final will be on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., the women’s at 3:30 p.m. and the senior men’s at 5:00 p.m.

Senior mens teams that will participate include Bella Coola, Gitanyow, Gitwinksihlkw, Greenville and Klemtu.

Women’s teams include Kitkatla, Gitwinksihlkw, Klemtu, Hesquiaht, Kincolith and Port Simpson.

The intermediate teams are Vancouver, New Aiyansh, Skidegate, Ahousaht, Greenville and Bella Coola.

The main tournament will run from Feb. 12 – 18 at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.

Rampage head east on road trip

The Prince Rupert Rampage will hit the road this weekend in its first back-to-back games of the season.

The Rampage will play the league-leading Williams Lake Stampeders on Saturday night and the Quesnel Kangaroos on Sunday.

Competition will be tough, as the Stampeders just lost its first game of the season. The Rampage beat the Kangaroos in Prince Rupert earlier in November.

The rhinos will be looking to bounce back from a disheartening 5-4 overtime loss to the Terrace River Kings last weekend.

Weekend minor hockey action

There’s plenty of hockey happening at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre this weekend. The Peewee Rep Seawolves will play two games, the first against Terrace at 11 a.m. and the second versus Houston at 4:15 p.m.

The Bantam Rep Seawolves will also get some ice time, hosting Smithers at 1:30 p.m.

The season is starting to ramp up, as both teams sharpen their skills for the upcoming December tournaments.
