The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Cross Country team, with Williams Lake’s Conlan Sprickerhoff captaining the squad, is off and running in more ways than one.
The WolfPack took nearly a full women’s team and half of their men’s team for a dual meet with the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Kelowna.
The men ran a six-kilometre course, while the women went four kilometres.
Sprickerhoff finished first in the event in a time of 21 minutes and 6.288 seconds.
New prizes added to Lakecity Chess Open
New awards are in place for the youth division at the Lakecity Chess Open.
First place will receive a trophy and a seat at the BC Junior Championship, reserve or booster sections.
Second and third place will receive a seat at the BC Championship Booster section.
There will be gift certificates and participation prizes for fourth, fifth and sixth places. Depending on the number of youths playing there could also be cash prize in each place to help with travel costs for those coming from out of town.
The Lakecity Chess Open is coming up Saturday, Oct. 15 and will house up to 40 players in both youth and open divisions.
Pre-registration is already underway for the tournament, which takes place at the Williams Lake Library.

For those who qualify for the BC Junior Chess Champion, the event takes place at Richmond’s Landsdowne Centre. The championships section runs for three days from Nov. 11-13, the reserve section goes from Nov. 11-13 and the booster section runs for one day on Nov. 12.

Men’s basketball registration underway
Men’s Recreational Basketball starts Oct. 5 at the Lake City Secondary School Columneetza Campus gymnasium beginning at 7 p.m.
Register at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex, or come and try it out first.
The league plays Wednesdays (league) and Fridays (pickup scrimmage) from 7 to 9 p.m.
Players of all levels of experience are welcome There is a minimum age 15.
