Provincial volleyball tourney coming to Abby; middle school rugby extravaganza

Abbotsford’s Jake Virtanen and the Calgary Hitmen have advanced to the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs after a 6-2 Game 7 victory over the Kootenay Ice on Monday.

The Hitmen will now take on the Medicine Hat Tigers in the second round.

Virtanen, the first round pick of the Vancouver  Canucks in 2014 and a member of the gold medal-winning Canada squad at the world juniors, didn’t score a goal in the seven-game series against Kootenay but managed seven helpers.

Game 1 of the series goes Friday at 7 p.m. in Medicine Hat.

 

Abbotsford hosting volleyball provincials

Some of the  top volleyball talent in the province is coming to Abbotsford later this month.

The 2015 Volleyball BC Provincial Championships, which brings together the best club teams from across the province, is a three-weekend tournament that will be hosted at the Tradex Convention Centre in Abbotsford and the Richmond Oval.

Last year, 320 teams participated in event and this year organizers are expecting even more.

Around 280 teams will be playing at the Abbotsford Tradex during the weekends of April 24 to 26 and May 1 to 3.

Rugby extravaganza

Fraser Middle will host the ARFC City Championship this Friday.

A total of 26 teams and 300 players from six Abbotsford schools will be competing for the prize.

The tournament runs from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Opening day for Abby minor fastball

Abbotsford Minor Fastball Association will be holding its opening day festivities at Elwood Park this weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday (April 11, 12) there will be clinics running in the mornings with exhibition games in the afternoons.

The MFA softball season starts in April and runs until  the end of June with teams playing twice per week and tournaments on limited weekends.
