Powerchair soccer fundraiser

A fundraising initiative is taking place at the Barley Mill Pub on Oct. 1 to support Penticton’s Daniel Cunningham, who is headed for Paris, France. Cunningham is playing with Team Canada in the World Powerchair Football competition in October. The team is trying to raise money to cut down on costs. Tickets for the buffet dinner have been pre-sold, but the public is welcome to take part in the raffle, toonie toss, 50/50 draw or make a donation. The event begins at 6 p.m.

Lakers downed by Steam

A 3-2 loss to the Summerland Steam have the Penticton Lakers at 3-2-0 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action. The Lakers hosted the Steam, who secured the win short-handed with two seconds left thanks to Jordan McCallum. The Lakers opened the scoring thanks to Steve Killy’s first goal of the season. Kale Erickson scored his fifth goal in as many games. Lakers goalie Jessie Gordichuk made 26 saves in a losing effort. The Lakers play in Princeton today. Mustangs at UBCO

Princess Margaret Mustangs junior girls volleyball team placed seventh among 27 teams during a tournament at UBC-O on Sept. 24. After going undefeated on opening day, the Mustangs nearly upset the Kelowna Secondary School Owls in the quarter-finals losing a close three-set match. It was their second tournament after winning the consolation final at a KSS tournament a week earlier. In league play, the Mustangs are 2-0.

Lakers swept aside

A three-game sweep at the hands of the Mt. Boucherie Bears is how the Pen High Lakers senior boys AAA volleyball team opened its regular season Wednesday. The Lakers lost  (25-18, 25-23, 25-23).  “Close match the whole way but Mt. Boucherie found ways to put the ball away and exploit our weaknesses,” said Lakers coach Scott Harkness.  Both teams are off to play in a 40-team tournament at UBC in Vancouver

Inter-club golf championship

The Summerland Golf and Country Ladies Club participated in the Inter-club competition with clubs from the North and South Okanagan.  Winning the North Okanagan was Shannon Lake with 482 points, followed by Vernon with 471; Summerland 458; Two Eagles 445; Shandow Ridge 440; Sunset Ranch 438; and Royal Yourk seventh with 387. Osoyoos captured the South Okanagan division with 778 points, followed by Summerland with 727, Fairview Mountain with 669, Penticton scoring 689, Nk’mip 685 and Twin Lakes with 626.

Summerland golf ladies night

In Stableford action for ladies, first flight winner was Linda Brusse followed by Diana Leitch and Carol Mulligan. Second flight winners were Donna Grant and Ev Crane, tied for second were Donna Pederson and Emmy Put and in third was Ruth Daviduk.
