AA and AAA boys volleyball provincials, Mustang Mania basketball tournament and men's rec highlighted

Lakers pushed

After finishing third in their pool during the AAA provincials in Kelowna on Wednesday, the Pen High Lakers lost to Reynolds Secondary (Greater Victoria) in five sets 25-23, 22-25, 18-25, 25-20 and 3-15. The Lakers lost to G.P. Vanier in three sets and are facing Delta for the chance to play for 13th/14th place finish. The Lakers won the first 25-16, then lost 25-21 and 15-13. The Lakers opened the championship on Wednesday losing to Fraser Heights (Surrey) in two sets, 25-15 and 25-20. The Lakers rebounded to defeat Oak Bay (Victoria) in two sets, 26-24 and 25-16. In their third match, the Lakers lost to Belmont (Langford near Victoria) in two sets, 25-19 and 25-18.

Mustangs contained

The Princess Margaret Mustangs finished fourth in their pool and drew Vernon’s Clarence Fulton for the opening draw of the playoffs Thursday. The Maroons came out on top in five sets winning 26-24, 26-24, 18-25, 18-25 and 15-11. The Mustangs got its first win of the championship against Smithers 25-20 and 25-18. They face McRoberts on Friday morning. The Mustangs opened by losing to College Heights Secondary (Prince George) in three sets, then lost to Nanaimo District in two, 25-14 and 25-22. They closed round robin play with a three-set loss to Highland Secondary School (Comox) 25-18, 19-25 and 11-15.

Mustang Mania

Princess Margaret Secondary is hosting a Mustangs Mania senior boys basketball tournament starting on national jersey day Friday and concluding during national sports day in Canada Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m. with Summerland facing Kalamalka, then the Mustangs host Kelowna Christian at 10:45 a.m. Immaculata and Guildford Park battle at 12:15 p.m.  The first round wraps up with Armstrong’s Pleasant Valley taking on Gibson’s Elphinstone at 2:15 p.m. Second round action continues Friday evening with the final scheduled for Saturday at 2:15 p.m.  Workhorse of the Game T-shirts awarded to athletes after every game for their hard work and effort on the court are sponsored by Link Snider of Royal LePage Locations West Realty.

Penticton Men’s Rec Hockey

In Penticton Men’s rec hockey, the Mule Broncos defeated the Game Time Sports Wolverines 11-7. Stuart Nisbet led the Broncos with four goals, while Andrew Pond and Doug Leitner added two each. For the Wolverines, it was Jack Strommen, Ryan MacMurchy and Derek Grimm with two goals each. The Broncos lead the league with an 8-2-0 record, while the Wolverines are now 3-7-0.The EcoDry Ice Dogs and Hitmen settled for a 4-4 final. For the Ice Dogs, Darren Leadbeater scored a hat-trick, while Doug Chadwick did the same for the Hitmen. The tie puts the Ice Dogs at 7-2-2 and the Hitmen at 5-4-2.
