Mustangs challenged
Facing stiff competition, Princess Margaret’s junior boys basketball team went 1-2-0. The Mustangs placed sixth out of eight teams in the North Delta tournament. The Mustangs lone win came against Clayton Heights from Surrey, 42-34 as Emery Lawrence scored 13 points and Harman Randhawa added 12 and Jas Sahota six. The Mustangs opened the tournament with a 48-39 loss to Point Grey. In their final game, the Mustangs lost a hard fought defensive battle with Delta Secondary from Ladner 37-29. Two late three-pointers sunk the Mustangs. Sanam Klar was chosen game star for his outstanding defensive play. Coach Dan Van Os said the Mustangs gained valuable experience playing against different styles.
“The Coast competition played a lot more zone defense than the young Mustangs had been used to,” said Van Os. The Mustangs have been off this week taking exams and will resume action on Feb. 1 against the Summerland Rockets.
Lakers get offence
Last weekend took the Pen High Lakers senior basketball team to Salmon Arm on Friday as well as North and South Kamloops on Saturday. Mitch Jacobsen scored a team-high 27 points and collected 13 rebounds in a 77-63 win. Their only loss came to South Kamloops 79-63 with Derek Wolf scoring 28 points and collecting seven assists with 10 rebounds. Travis Petersen stepped up to score 30 points and help the Lakers edge North Kamloops 88-80. The Lakers also received an offensive boost from Jacobsen with 27 points and 21 rebounds and Wolf, who added 21 points, six assists and 10 rebounds.
“We are happy to come away with two wins,” said Lakers coach Dustin Hyde. “We were hoping for three but we knew that South Kamloops was going to be very tough. They have a junior national team player on their team who is very big and very skilled. Mitch matched up against him throughout the game and really held his numbers in check in the second half. The best outcome was how we played as a team and how we came together as a unit. We are continuing to improve and looking better with each game.”
Today, the Lakers will take on the South Okanagan Secondary Hornets in the Old Shoe game at Maggie at 5 p.m.
Vees split first two
On Wednesday night, the Penticton Vees rebounded from a 4-1 loss against the Powell River Kings by defeating the Cowichan Valley Capitals 5-1. Joey Benik and Mark MacMillan each had a goal and assist, while Vees affiliate player Carter Rigby collected two assists on goals by Joey Laleggia and MacMillan. Other Vees goals scorers were Brendan O’Donnell who opened the scoring, Curtis Loik and Steven Iacobellis. Joel Rumpel made 31 saved in the win. The Vees have been without the services of defenceman Troy Stecher with an injury since Saturday. The Vees continue their coastal trip having a date with the Nanaimo Clippers today.
Ice Dragons get sweep
In minor hockey, the Penticton Ice Dragons defeated the Kamloops Nightmares 8-4 and 4-1. With Morgan Tremblay in goal, Morgan Brooks scored her first goal of the year and finished with a hat trick. Lyndsy Fotheringham scored twice and Sage Togyi, Casey Carriere and Sophie D’estimauville each scoring one. In the second game, Brooks again found the back of the net with two goals. Stephanie Lagrange pocketed three assists and Carriere scored one.
In Penticton men’s recreational hockey, Kyle Fraser’s hat trick helped the Bisons defeat the Barking Parrot Passouts 10-6. Also scoring for the Bisons were Mike Funk and Dan Fraser with two goals and one goal each for Josh Van Troyen, Kiel Gatenby and Jesse Van Troyen. For the Passouts, Shea Shillitto scored twice, while Dallas Worthington, Derek Affleck, Gabe Rossi and Ryan Hawes scored once each.
The Bisons then defeated the Peacock’s Perch Wolverines 11-7. Gatenby and Jeremy Van Troyen had hat tricks, Dan Fraser and Brent Mosses scored twice and Kyle Fraser added the 11th goal. The Wolverines got scoring from Reid Jackson with three, Kevin Karlson, Ryan Eden, Blair Bosscher and Andy McGinn.
Best Damn Sports Bar Wings flew past the Hitment 7-0. Matt Poster posted the shutout while Tim Card scored twice and Brendan Miller, Rob Dekock, PJ Forbes, Tommy Gabriel and Joel Graf scored the other goals.
The Wolverines rebounded to defeat the Broncos 7-5. Kevin Borba and Jesse Repchuk scored twice with singles from Jason Pickford, Riley Kitchen and Reid Jackson. Cody Devitt scored twice for the Broncos while Josh Seddon, Jordan Moss and Chad Taylor also scored.
The Bisons rolled over the Wings 7-3. Jesse Van Troyen scored three, while Dan and Kyle Fraser, Gatenby and Funk added the other markers. Card and Jamin Feist scored for the Wings.
