Sports: In Brief

A look at sporting events in Prince Rupert for the last week.

$5,200 donated to charity

The 2016 Island Softball Tournament is over, but the main reason it occurred was to raise money for charity. Those numbers are now finalized.

The Broadwater Drivers won the right to naming the first place donation, thanks to wining the tournament. The company’s team chose the Canadian Cancer Society, which received $3,000.

The Prince Rupert Minor Softball Association will get $1,000 for the second-place team, the JV Vipers.

The remaining $1,200 from the raffle and food proceeds went to the Prince Rupert Wildlife Rehab Shelter.

Last year, the inaugural tournament raised $1,500. The organizers had been hoping to double that this year and they nearly tripled that goal.

Team passes fundraising goal

The Prince Rupert Ride to Conquer Cancer team – which also includes Lax Kw’alaams and Port Edward – surpassed its fundraising goal of $30,700.

The 12 members cycling from Vancouver to Seattle last weekend raised $34,196.

Province-wide, the charity cycle raised $7.1 million by the 1,687 participants across B.C.

All funds raised go to the BC Cancer Foundation to help support cancer research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency.

Coach training for Gymnastics

The Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association is going to host a Level 1 National Coach Certification Program over the March break and those interested can volunteer starting September. Students can also get volunteer hours for their community requirements and they can sign up for the Level 1 coaching program.

Head coach Bill Tyrwhitt said “It’s a good way for students for when they go off to university. The big cities are always in need for gymnastics coaches and it’s good part-time job.”

Gymnastics registration has already begun with more than 100 gymnasts signed up. The next chance to sign up is on Sept. 7, 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the civic centre. For those interested in coaching, they can contact the club at portgym@gmail.com.
