Canadian Freestyle Ski team, Heat lacrosse, lawn bowling, cricket and slo pitch highlighted in sports briefs

Naude, Margetts make freestyle team

Canada unveiled its national freestyle ski team for 2014. Named to the team from Penticton in half pipe is Matt Margetts, in moguls is Andi Naude. Other Okanagan athletes named were Vernon’s Justin Dorey in half pipe and Noah Morrison in slope style. The team will have 20 women and 30 men represent a mix of seasoned veterans and new talent in four freestyle disciplines that are under the CFSA umbrella: moguls, aerials, halfpipe and slopestyle.

“I am very confident in the talent and potential of this team,” said CFSA High Performance Program director David Mirota. “Not only do we have very strong medal hopes in virtually every category for Sochi, but we also have a deep pool of athletes who have podium potential for 2018 and beyond.”

Heat lacrosse

Penticton Advantage Mini-Storage midget Heat tied for third in the Richmond lacrosse tournament the weekend of May. 18. The team defeated Surrey 5-2, Langley 12-2, Semiahmoo 8-7 and lost to Coquitlam 5-2 and 12-1 to a strong Oceanside team in the semifinals. Game stars for the Heat were goalie Brendan Steed, Brett Van Os, Ethan Marsden-Blackface, Steve Scroggie and Kiana Casavant.

Lawn bowling

Weather didn’t deter the Penticton Lawnbowling Club from holding its first tournament of the season. Winner of the mixed pairs was Bryan Newsted and Myrna McLaren.

Another win for Royals

The Okanagan Royals cricket team defeated PakCan 128-11 at Keogan Park in Okanagan Falls. Bobby Brar scored 10 runs and Raj Mohan brought in 16. Top bowler was JP Bansoota. Stevo Prowse of the Royals said the team is off to a good start with three wins. Their next home game is against the Surrey Hawks on June 15.

Penticton Mixed Slo Pitch

In Penticton Mixed Slo pitch, the Dirtbags lead the A division with a 15-2 record. In second place is Jack’s Java Stop at 12-4-1, while the Print Factory Flyers are 12-4-0. In the B division, Konanz Chiropractic leads with a 13-2-2 record.  They defeated the Brew Jays 13-6. and T.W.T Wise Guys 11-6. The Brat Pack are second at 13-3-0 and the Oddballz are third at 8-5-1. In the C division, the Sun FM Rockers lead with a 14-3-0 record, while Lake City Casino High Rollers are second at 12-5-0 and Renaissance Smokin’ Aces at 9-7-1. In the D division, K-OS leads with a 13-0-1 mark, while Looking to Score is second with 10-5-2 and the Green Cube Mad Dogs 10-5-0. In the E division, the Loopers are 12-4-1. They are enjoying a three-game win streak. Behind them in second are the Flushers at 12-5-0 and in third is Pitch Slap at 10-5-0.
