Margetts in top 10
Penticton’s Matt Margetts placed 10th in an FIS World Cup event in Copper, Col. on Jan. 11. Margetts had trouble on his second hit in both finals runs. The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association reported that he landed low in the pipe both times he performed the alleyoop flatspin 540, which caused him to lose speed, affecting his next tricks. He finished the day with a top score of 54.6. In other CFSA news, they are celebrating the 2013 World Cup Moguls Grand Prix in Canada Olympic Park Jan. 26 by having three weekly draws. Up for grabs are CFSA 2012 team jacket and Auclair gloves, two VIP passes to 2013 Freestyle Ski Moguls Grand Prix and one night at the Westin Calgary and a gift certificate to Melrose Cafe and Bar. Dart standings
The Smokin Aces remain at the top of the Penticton and District Dart Association standings with 92 points. The leaders earned seven on Jan. 14, to give them a two-point advantage on the Best Damn Sports Bar No.1, who are second with 90. They scored six. In third are the Elks No.1 with 77 points after scoring six as well. Rounding out the top five are Best Damn Sports Bar Snipers and Elks Bullits at fourth and fifth with 74 and 68 points respectively. Darren Stanvick was tied with Les Martin and Brad Virtue for the high score of 174 for the men, while Adrian Alva had the high out at 154. On the women’s side, Rose White had the high score of 160, while Kathy Thew had the high out with 118.
Men’s rec hockey
In Penticton men’s rec hockey action, Gord Henderson scored twice to lead the EcoDry Ice Dogs to a 7-5 win against the Mule Broncos. The Hitmen shutdown the Game Time Sports Wolverines 10-3. They were led by Dave Sandrelli with four goals and Mark Petry with three. Ryan MacMurchy scored twice for the Wolverine. The Bar One Argo Bisons defeated the Mule Broncos 5-3. Dan Fraser led the Broncos with two goals.
Penticton Minor Hockey
In Penticton Minor Hockey Association action, the Chiefs won the Winfield bantam rec tournament thanks to the efforts of Travis Stephens and Jace Canada in goal. They received MVP awards along with went to Jake McHale and Kiver Heintz.
Penticton hosted a midget rec tournament on Jan. 4 to 6. The White Kennedy team went 2-1-1, while Save On Foods was 2-2 in four games. The Barley Mill Vees tied Kelowna 3-3, lost to Abbotsford 4-2 defeated Nelson 4-2 and lost to Kamloops 3-2. Their most valuable players were Dustyn Badach, Gunnar Fulton, Tyler Trupp and Wes Rasmussen. It was a 16-team tournament featuring teams from Cranbrook , Nelson , Kelowna , Westside , Vernon , Kamloops with two teams , Abbotsford , Chilliwack with two teams, Langley, Port Moody and Semiahmoo . Vernon won the championship 5-3 over Abbotsford .
The Penticton Rockets, who won their home tournament last weekend, went to Semiahmoo for a Christmas Challenge and won defeating the host, Lightning 7-2. After placing second in their pool, the Rockets earned wins against the Semiahmoo Thunderbirds 3-2 and Langley Warriors 4-2 game Thomas Dufour was given most valuable player honors for his two-goal effort that included the winner. Tournament MVP was Adrian Orioli.
“The team played excellent defence all weekend long and really came together playing as a team and having lots of fun,” wrote coach Tony Orioli in an email.
