Lawn bowl trophy stays at home

The Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club kept the Nanaimo/Qualicum Challenge trophy at home for another year by out-duelling the Nanaimo Lawn Bowling club in a two-day mixed triples showdown at both clubs last week.

The club challenge series began in 1982 with eight mixed triples teams from the two clubs going head-to-head for club honour in a friendly challenge. Games were played Wednesday in Nanaimo and Thursday in Qualicum Beach, where Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club president Bernice Urbaniak presented the challenge trophy to QBLBC games director Mike Ward after the local club won on overall points.

Up next, Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club welcomes spectators to the Todd Sjogren Mixed Pairs Tournament this weekend, July 30-31, with bowling beginning at 9 a.m. each day. The tourney will draw 32 teams from across the mid and north Island to battle for the trophy and cash prizes.

Parksville golfer makes Hay at B.C. Senior’s

Kim Hay of Parksville finished in an 11th-place tie in the B.C. Senior Men’s golf championship at Shuswap Lake Estates Golf Club in Blind Bay on Thursday.

Hay, a member at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort, shot a three-round total of 225, finishing 11-over par after struggling to a 6-over 77 in Thursday’s final round. Hay entered the final round in an eighth-place tie at 5-over-par 148.

The tournament was won by Harry Ferguson of Invermere, who edged Port Moody’s Gudmund Lingbjerg in a one-hole playoff after both golfers finished at even-par 214. Hall-of-Famer Doug Rosburgh of Vancouver, who last week competed in his 50 B.C. Amateur Championship at Pheasant Glen, was alone in third place at 4-over-par 218.

Hay did come away from the week with one winning plaque. He teamed with Nanaimo’s Sandy Harper, Lake Cowichan’s Mark Kloske and B.I. Otto of Nanoose Bay and Morningstar Golf Club to win the zone team championship for Zone 6 (Vancouver Island North). The quartet finished the two-round zone competition at 17-over-par 446, nine strokes better than Zone 4 and Zone 2, which shared runner-up honours.
