Ice Girls softball, minor hockey, KIJHL action and former Vee named to all-conference team

Ice Girls win three

The Penticton Ice Girls softball team returned from the Pepsi Challenge at Softball City Sept. 12-14. with a 3-2 record.

The Ice Girls opened with a 7-0 loss to the Surrey Storm, then regrouped to double up Quesnel 8-4. The Ice Girls then whipped the Victoria Royals 15-1 and lost to the Langley Extreme 4-2 before finishing up with a 17-2 thumping against Island Peninsula.

Tatiana Brazinha earned two wins and a loss on the mound, while Jaedyn Foley was 1-1.  Ice Girls coach Jeff Korven said Rebecca Livesey was outstanding defensively all weekend and Amy Woodhouse was stellar at the plate.

Peewee Vees win

The Penticton peewee AAA Sherwood Trophies Vees opened its season with a tie and a win against Kelowna.

On Friday, the Vees tied 7-7 at Memorial Arena. Scoring for the Vees were Linden Sproule and Ethan O’Rourke with two goals, while Levi Carter, Ben LeFranc and Tyler Henderson scored one goal each. In the 3-2 win Saturday, Carter, LeFranc and Henderson scored.

Coyotes and Steam keep winning

Luc Gradisar scored a natural hat trick to lead the Osoyoos Coyotes past the 100 Mile House Wranglers, 4-1 on Friday night. Colin Bell made it 4-0 for the visitors before Devan Suidy scored for the Wranglers to break Lawrence Langan’s shutout. Langan finished with 21 saves. In Kamloops at McArthur Park Arena Saturday, the Coyotes needed overtime to defeat the Storm 2-1. There was no scoring through two periods, then Felix Larouche gave the home team the lead. Colten Braid netted the equalizer for the Steam with 7:37 left in the third period. He then potted the winner at 4:31. Langan made 36 saves in the win. The Coyotes remained undefeated at 7-0-0.

The Summerland Steam charged their way through the North Okanagan Knights 6-1 on Saturday at Summerland Arena. Paulsen Lautard led the way offensively with two goals and an assist. His first goal ended up being the winner in the penalty-filled contest. Also scoring for the Steam were Calvin Hadley, Easton Bodeux and Jack Mills. Brett Huber made 26 saves to help improve the Steam to 5-1-0 on the season.

Laleggia named to all-conference team

Former Penticton Vees Joey Laleggia has been named to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) pre-season all-conference team going into his senior year at the University of Denver. LaLeggia, a 2012 Edmonton Oilers draft pick,  received 19 votes from media members to earn a spot on the team. The Burnaby product is the lone other returning First-Team All-NCHC selection along with University of Miami senior forward Austin Czarnik.

The reigning NCHC Defenceman of the Year tied for the NCHC lead among blueliners in 2013-14 with 25 points and had a NCHC-best 12 goals. His 25 points on the campaign tied with Colorado College rearguard Jacob Slavin for most in the conference last season.

In 114 career games with the Vees, Laleggia racked up 33 goals and 114 assists for 147 points over two full seasons. He was named the 2011 Interior Conference Top Defenceman and MVP.
