Parksville 55+ curlers ready to rock; Island race series registration opens

A touch of gray may well be a theme song candidate when Parksville Curling Club hosts its annual Ladies 55+ Bonspiel, We are All Rock Stars, Nov. 11-13.

The Remembrance Day weekend event will feature two games each on Friday and Saturday and a final round Sunday before wrapping up with a Sunday afternoon banquet.

A full field of 20 teams has pre-registered, representing clubs from up and down Vancouver Island and even the lower mainland, co-ordinator Christine Davis said.

“We expect all to have a rockin’ good time,” said Davis.

Spectators are welcome, and the club’s lounge will be open throughout the bonspiel along with a concession. Parksville Curling Club is located just inside the entrance to Parksville’s Community Park, at 220 Corfield St. N.

For more information visit the club’s website at www.parksvillecurling.com or the Parksville Curling Club Facebook page.

Expanded Island road racing series offers discounted early registration

The 36th running of the Vancouver Island Race Series begins in January and registration for the 2017 series is now open.

The series will be eight races across the south and mid-Island from January to April, at distances ranging from 5 kilometres to a half marathon. The 2017 series includes the addition of a new race — the April 2 Port Alberni Paper Chase 10K.

“We are delighted to be back up to eight races in 2017, and welcome back the Port Alberni Paper Chase, which was in the series many years ago,” said Jonathan Foweraker, president of the Vancouver Island Runners’ Association. “We have a fresh new brand for the series with the tag line ‘Run Series – Fun Series’. We want to attract more recreational runners and families and showcase the many communities on the Island.”

The eight-race 2017 schedule:

• Jan. 8 — Harriers Pioneer 8K (Saanich)

• Jan. 22 — Cobble Hill 10K

• Feb. 5 — Sooke River 10K

• Feb. 19 — Hatley Castle 8K (Langford)

• March 5 — Bazan Bay 5K (Victoria)

• March 19 — Comox Valley RV Half Marathon

• Apr. 2 — Port Alberni Paper Chase 10K

• Apr. 9 — Cedar 12K and Series Awards

Returning for a third year as Charity Partner is Victoria Hospitals Foundation. When registering participants will have the opportunity to top up their registration and support the many rehabilitative services at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Early bird registration for the full series is $150 until Dec. 1 at www.islandseries.org. Cost from Dec. 1 to Jan. 8 will be $175. Runners may also pre-register online for individual races.
