Parksville lawn bowlers dominate Nanaimo tourney; Bowser golfer 10th in B.C. Junior Championship

Parksville lawn bowlers laid siege to the annual Imagine Cruises mixed triples tournament last weekend in Nanaimo, sweeping the top six of eight competitive divisions at Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club.

The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club trio of skip Martin Fereday, Chris Fereday and Olav Skelbred claimed the A division and tournament trophy.

They were followed by club mates Rick Dolley and Stu and Jan MacNaughton (B champions); Alan Brunskill, Sandra Mitchell and Ken Olenick (C champions); Keith Terlson and Ken and Carol Bucyk (D champions); Dave Cole, Bob Mascho and Linda Kummer (E champions) and Roberta Stets, Andy Burton and Dave Muir (F champions).

Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club got into the act by taking the G division behind Bob and Joyce Findlay and Joe Randazzo.

Up next: Parksville lawn bowlers will try to keep the momentum rolling when they host the Royal Canadian Legion/Ferguson Exteriors Open Triples tournament this weekend. The men’s and women’s tourney will feature games Saturday and Sunday at 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m.

Ratcliffe 10th in B.C. Junior Girls Golf

Megan Ratcliffe of Bowser placed 10th in the B.C. Junior Girls Golf Championship last week, shooting an 18-over-par 306 over 72 holes of play at Big Sky Golf Club in Pemberton.

The tournament was won by Mary Parsons of Delta, who ran away from the field with an even-par 288 that was six strokes better than the nearest challengers.

Ratcliffe, who has committed to play Division 1 golf at the University of Hawaii beginning in 2017, was one stroke ahead of Abigail Rigsby of Courtenay, who has also trained at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach.

A third local golfer, Parksville’s Kayli Melissa, missed the final cut with a three-round total of 274. Melissa, who took up golfing last July, will compete for the Vancouver Island Zone team this week in the 2016 B.C. Summer Games in Abbotsford.
