Steam, Chiefs meet in playoffs
The Summerland Steam capped off the 2016-17 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season with a pair of wins over the Princeton Posse and Kamloops Storm on the road.
The Steam will now host the Kelowna Chiefs in the opening round at Summerland Arena Feb. 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m.
During the regular season, the Steam won six of the eight matches, including four on home ice. Both losses in Kelowna were by one goal. In their wins, the Steam outscored the Chiefs 21-12.
The Steam finished the season 34-9-1-3, good for 72 points and second place in the Okanagan Shuswap Conference. In 23 regular season home games, the Steam was 18-3-1-1.
Karate students competing in nationals
Will Wright, Caitlyn Riddle and Simoka Slizek will represent the Taneda Karate Dojo with Team B.C. at the Canadian National Championships in Quebec City Feb. 24 to 26.
The trio are part of the largest B.C. team in history, 103 members, to compete.
All three qualified through a Karate B.C. selection tournament, Karate B.C. Open event and provincials.
“Caitlyn fought really well,” said Team B.C. coach Mike Ditson. “She had three or four fights and she fought unbelievably well.”
After competing in the B.C. Winter Games in Penticton last year, Ditson said that Riddle of Summerland has stepped up to the elite division and is a green belt.
“A lot of improvement for her. Then to be No.1 in the province was a good accomplishment for her,” he said.
Ditson described Simonka, another Summerland native, as dedicated and has improved a lot since last year.
Wright, from Twin Lakes, is attending UBC and competed in nationals in 2014 when it was held in Richmond. Wright earned a silver medal in the under-21 division and also placed fifth in the men’s division.
Alley Brats top dart league
The Alley Brats scored eight to reach 30 in the Penticton and District Dart Association Standings as of Feb. 20, week three. In second, five points behind the Alley Brats are the Smokin Aces, who scored six points for 25 in total. The Wreckers and Hand Grenades are tied for third with 20 points, while Elks No.1 rounds out the top five with 19 points. Elks Points leads the B-Division with 19 points after scoring five. They hold a two-point edge on Shooting Stars and Clanceys Arrows, who have 17. Tied for fourth are the Legion No. 1 and Dart Bags.
Rona-HLW top soccer teams
Rona and Harvey-Lister-Webb topped the Bad Tattoo Brewery Masters Indoors Soccer League with nine wins in 15 games. HLW bested Rona in a 7-3 final. Jon Padgett and Reid Jenkins each scored twice to lead HLW, while Harry Higson, Rob Kroeker and Joe Kandola scored for Rona. In the other match, TC Auto Sales earned a 15-7 win over PE Lock and Key. Brian Johnston led TC Auto with a six-goal performance, while Peter Toth added three. For PLK, Peter Ruocco led with four goals. The playoffs will take place this Sunday at the Adidas SportsPlex. In one semifinal, TC Auto will face HLW at 10 a.m., while Rona and PE Lock and Key will play in the other semi at 11:15 a.m. The game for third will be on March 5.
