Vees exhibition games, ticket party, sailing regatta and more highighted in sports briefs

Vees games, ticket party

The Penticton Vees are hosting an intra-squad game Friday at the South Okanagan Events Centre at 3 p.m. that is free for the public to attend. The Vees then have an exhibition game in Vernon on Aug. 30 and two home exhibition games on Sept. 5 against the West Kelowna Warriors at 7 p.m. and Sept. 14 against the Merritt Centennials at 5:30 p.m. The Vees’ other road exhibition game is Sept. 6 in West Kelowna. There will be a season ticket pickup party on Sept.17 on the plaza at the SOEC from 4 to 6 p.m., sponsored by Marketplace IGA, who are providing food for a barbecue, while supplies last as fans mingle with the 2014-20145 Vees. For fans unable to attend, season ticket booklets will be available at the SOEC box office the following day, Sept. 18 after 10 a.m. Contact the box office (250-276-2144) or Fraser Rodgers at 250-809-1390 if you need your season ticket booklet mailed or picked up by a third party. Exhibition tickets are not included in this year’s season ticket packages but are just $5 for all ages and go on sale on Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. and are available at the Valley First box office.

Okanagan sailing regatta

The Penticton Yacht Club is hosting the Okanagan Grand Prix Regatta, sponsored by Panama Red Rum, Saturday and Sunday starting at 9:30 and 10 a.m., respectively. As many as 15 boats, eight from Penticton, are expected to sail in the final regatta of the year. “Everyone has a good time,” said Harvey Ryll, member of the Penticton Yacht Club. “Everybody is excited about it.”

Winners will receive a bottle of Panama Red Rum with other prizes being given for finishing second and third. The weekend will wrap up a season which Ryll said was very good. This season an Okanagan Race Week was created with races between the Summerland and Kelowna Yacht Clubs with a regatta in each city.

“Hopefully it will grow for next year,” said Ryll.

Ryll also said they would like to attract more people to the sport adding they are always looking for crew members or people who own sailsboats who might be interested in racing. Penticton senior golf

Lew Norman’s team won the Penticton Golf Club’s senior men five-man team format scoring 177 on Aug. 27. Following Norman’s team was Barney Bernard, Merv Parasiuk and Mr. Net Par. Second place was Al Cartwright, Ron Stone, Vern Benedictson and Bob Elliott.

Marilyn Wiens scored 41 to win the par points event held Aug.16 by the Penticton Golf and Country Club ladies club.  In second was Hee Won Park. Winning the 26-plus handicap was Wendy Tycholaz scoring 37, followed by Lynn Popoff with 36.

Moody takes Twin Lakes championship

Bernice Moody defended her Twin Lakes Club Championship on Aug.18. The overall low net winner was Barb Lacey. Low gross first flight winner was Darlene Gordon, while Chrystal Traquair was the net first flight winner. Pat Horner was the second flight gross winner with Lou-Anne Gowing taking the net second flight. Dan Bates is the men’s club low gross champ, while Bob Biro is the low net winner. First flight low gross and net winners were Reid Sutherland and Tom Livingston, respectively.

Vaagen scores 141 in Rental Center Cup

Vijai Vaagen scored 141 to capture the Summerland Golf and Country Club Rental Center Cup on Aug. 26. Linda Palmer scored 142 for runner up, while third went to Carol Mulligan at 147. Winning closest to the pin on day one was Lil Smith, while Carol Mulligan took it on the second day. Longest putts went to Helen Benallick, Mulligan, Janis Goll and Smith.

Centennials and Vipers bench boss named to Canada West staff

The Canadian Junior Hockey League, in partnership with Hockey Canada, announced today that Trent Cassan, head coach and general manager of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Yorkton Terriers, will be the head coach of Canada West at the 2014 World Junior A Challeng Dec. 14-20 in Kindersley, Sask. Among Cassan’s assistant coaches will be Luke Pierce, head coach and general manager of the Merritt Centennials and Vernon Vipers coach-GM Jason Williamson. Pierce, 31, is making his debut with Canada West at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge. He coached Team West at the 2013 CJHL Prospects Games. Williamson will be an assistant coach in the tournament for the first time.
