Football club hosts Halloween Walk; women's soccer rained out; Legion hosts darts tourney

Halloween fans have their choice of spooky or scary when the Ballenas Whalers Football Society helps host the 2016 Nanoose Bay Halloween Walk Oct. 28-29.

The walk, at 2525 Northwest Bay Rd., takes place from 6:30-10 p.m. each evening. It features two loops: a “spooky walk” trail promising fun for all ages, and a “scary walk” trail for the more stout of heart. The event is a fundraiser, for the Ballenas Whalers Football Society and the Nanoose Bay Elementary School.

The trails will be lined with 150 decorated pumpkins, thanks to the donation of 50 pumpkins each from Parksville’s Quality Foods, Thrifty Foods and Save on Foods. The walk is expected to take from 20-35 minutes.

Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and no Halloween masks or pets will be allowed. There is no parking on-site; please park on Claudet or Stewart roads.

Tickets are $5 per person, or $20 for a family of five, and include a cookie and cocoa, while supplies last. Children two years old and younger are admitted free.

Women’s soccer match rained out; next home game Oct. 30

The wet and windy weather that blew through Vancouver Island last weekend forced the cancellation of four Mid-Island Women’s Soccer League matches, including the Oceanside Lions’ scheduled match Sunday against the Marine Harvest Bandits.

Two games were cancelled in Courtenay and another in Nanaimo in the aftermath of several days of rain, which saturated grass fields.

Following the cancellation of their respective games in Qualicum Beach and Nanaimo, the Bandits and the Cermaq Outlaws scheduled a cross-town game in Campbell River, on the new turf field at Robron Park.

The Lions (1-2-1) next play at home Oct. 30 at noon against the Alberni Athletics.
