French Creek Salmon Derby this weekend; darts league opens registration

The organizers say the emphasis is more on fishing than catching, but there will still be plenty of prizes on offer during the annual Save on Foods French Creek Salmon Derby this weekend.

The derby begins Friday at dawn and wraps up noon Sunday, with awards and prize presentations following at 1 p.m. outside the French Creek Marine Pub.

Proceeds from the event go towards the Marion Baker Fish Hatchery in French Creek. Last year’s derby generated a $5,700 donation to the hatchery.

Prizes will be awarded for the largest salmon weighed in daily, and for the largest salmon overall. There will also be a number of hidden weight prizes.

Save on Foods will host a barbecue beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday at French Creek Marine Pub in advance of the awards presentation.

Tickets are $10 per rod, and it’s not necessary to fish to get in on the action and the fundraiser for Marion Baker Hatchery.

Tickets are available now at the French Creek Harbour Store and at French Creek Marine Pub.
