Club golf champions, Ocean Mile Swim, rep hockey tryouts on tap

Swimmers of all ages can head down to the waterfront at Qualicum Beach this Sunday.

The 58th annual Ocean Mile Swim is Aug. 14 by the boat ramp and the Beach Hut Restaurant and Concession.

Registration, which is free, will be held on-site from 1-2:45 p.m. with the swim starting at 3 p.m.

The awards presentation will start around 4:30 p.m. with 14 classes of awards.

Extra ends needed on lawn

Parksville’s lawn bowling newcomers displayed the steely reserve of veterans last week as the men’s and women’s finals both went to extra-end tiebreakers in the club’s annual novice championship tournament.

In the end, the winning men’s plaque was awarded to Lloyd Pelton, who outlasted runner-up Wayne Abbott. The women’s award was presented by club president Ron Davis to Gerda Veld, who prevailed over Donna Dunne in the overtime final.

Rep hockey tryouts nearing

Tryouts for the 2016-17 Oceanside Generals rep (competition) hockey teams will take place Aug. 29 through Sept. 4 in both the Meeker and Kratz arenas at Oceanside Place.

Tryout week will begin Monday, Aug. 29, with an evaluators and coaches meeting at

4 p.m. at Howie Meeker Arena. Tryouts that day commence at 5:15 p.m. in Kratz Arena and 6:45 in Meeker Arena.

Practices for all recreational divisions will begin the following week, on Sept. 6.
