White hattrick leads Vees
Carter White sniped a hat trick to lead the Penticton Murray GM bantam Tier 2 Vees to a 9-2 win over the Castlegar Rebels on the road. The Vees wrapped up 2016 with back-to-back wins over the Rebels on Dec. 30 and 31. In the 9-2 win, Aaron Funk added two goals, while Matt Olsen, Isaac Newson, Brennan Nelson and Levi Carter each scored. In the first game, the Vees won 7-3. Finn Halladay led with two goals, while Jacob Obuck, Kai Espenhain, Ryan Polvere, White and Olsen scored. The Vees lead the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association bantam division with four league games remaining until the playoffs.
Grenades stay on top
The Hand Grenades scored six points on Jan. 2 to maintain their lead in the Penticton and District Dart Association standings after 16 weeks. The Hand Grenades have a seven-point lead on the second-place Alley Brats, who scored four points. In third are the Elks 1 with 82 points following a five-point performance. In fourth are the Smokin Aces with 81 points after scoring seven. The Clancy’s Snipers are in fifth with 80 points after scoring three.
Doug Belanger earned the high score with 177 and the men’s high out with 153. He also hit 180. Ryan McKenzie hit 180 three times. On the women’s side, Karen Franz got the high score with 160 points while Missy Kolbe got the high out at 124.

Lakers get bounced by Owls
The Pen High Lakers senior girls basketball team lost to the Kelowna Owls on Tuesday by 49 points. Lakers coach Dustin Hyde said they battled hard in the first half, but the second got ugly. Hyde said their biggest issues were rebounding, turnovers, and transition defence.
“KSS is a very good guard team. They move transition the ball up the floor as good as any team in the province,” said Hyde. “We struggled to get back defensively and gave up too many lay ups. That coupled, with poor rebounding led to a brutal second half. As mentioned, we played well in the first half and were down 17 going into the half.”
The Lakers turned the ball over more than 30 times and Hyde said they won’t have success against any team with that many turnovers. Lyndzie Caron had 26 points with six oards. The Lakers did not have another player in double digit scoring, which concerns Hyde.
“We need players to step up and score the ball.”
