Skeena River Relay opens
The popular Skeena River Relay is now open for registration.
The race isn’t until June 3, but as anyone who has waited too long in the past knows, it fills up fast.
The relay is a 142 km, five-to-ten person race that goes from the Lester Centre in Prince Rupert to Canadian Tire in Terrace. There are 10 stages of varied lengths, each ranging between 10 and 21 km.
Only 30 teams can register for the race, and it fills quickly with groups from Prince Rupert, Terrace, Telkwa, Smithers, Kitimat, Houston and even Haida Gwaii participating. Last year, 12 of the 30 teams were from Rupert.

Rampage end regular season
The Rupert Rampage continue their homestand on Saturday night by hosting the Smithers Steelheads.
The Steelheads come into town as the second-best team in the league, with a 10-4 record.
With just two games left in the season, the Rampage are still battling for playoff positioning. Currently, the team sits in fourth place with 15 points, but the Terrace River Kings are in third just three points ahead. If the rhinos can sweep the Steelheads in a home-and-home set and Terrace loses its last three games, the Rampage would end the season with its best finish since the 2010/11 season when it won the West Division.
The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre.
Fisherman’s Sturling Spiel
The Prince Rupert Curling Club is hosting its first bonspiel of 2017 this weekend.
On Saturday, the Fisherman’s Sturling Spiel will take place at the club. The two-person teams will each play three games of stick or slide delivery.
Teams can still register until the end of day on Jan. 18. The cost is $60 per team, including dinner.
Anyone is welcome to come watch the teams battle it out after dinner. Wheelhouse beer will be available during and after the finals.
