LOOKING SHARPE

LOOKING SHARPE

There are four area athletes attending the 2011 Canada Winter Games, which run Feb. 11-27 in Halifax.

Last week’s story on the local contingent inadvertently omitted freestyle skier Cassie Sharpe, a Comox athlete who now trains in Whistler.

A nine-year veteran in her sport with a national title to her credit, Sharpe is on the B.C. park and pipe team and will be doing big air, moguls, halfpipe and slopestyle skiing.

Also on Team BC are coach Dave Battison and athlete Andrea Lee of the Strathcona Nordics cross-country ski club and Max Heard of the Mt. Washington Freestyle Club.

TY TIME

Ty Wishart made an impressive debut with the New York Islanders on Saturday, Feb. 5, contributing two assists and finishing with a plus-one rating in a 5-3 win over the Ottawa Senators.

The former San Jose first-round draft pick, who was obtained from Tampa Bay for veteran goalie Dwayne Roloson on Jan. 1, was paired with Milan Jurcina on the blueline.

Wearing No. 6, Wishart set up second star Michael Grabner and first star Rob Schremp for first-period goals. He finished with 15 minutes and 20 seconds of ice time before his new hometown crowd at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale.

KING THING

The Comox Valley will be royally represented at this Saturday’s King of the Ring card in Campbell River.

Featuring some of B.C.’s top amateur MMA fighters, the 15-bout card main event has Chris Anderson of the Comox Valley taking on Nick Austin of Kelowna in a 170-pound welterweight bout.

The first in a series of fight events planned for Campbell River, King of The Rock will also feature training camp dates with Neil Melanson from Randy Couture’s gym, as well as the Bikini Blackmail charity fundraiser with the KOTR ring girls which raised some $4,000 for BC Children’s Hospital.

The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Thunderbird Hall (1420 Wewaikum Road) with doors open at 6 p.m. For tickets, call 250-898-1175. For more on the card, watch Friday’s Record sports.
