Suddenly spring is just a couple of weeks away and certainly thoughts are already turning to warmer days ahead. One indicator of the upcoming change of season is that registration is now underway for those wishing to play in local fastball, softball and baseball leagues…

We’ll have information on the Nanaimo and District Minor Fastball Association and the Nanaimo Breakers minor fastpitch softball association next week.

Returning as president of the Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association this season is Scott Leaf, with Mike Holyk the first vice-president and second vice-president Peter MacNeil. Also on the executive are treasurer Carla Burgmann, secretary Kim Darbyshire and registrar Dave Humphries. Doug Neff is the field manager, Jeff Stevens the equipment manager, Glenn Buckle the all-star coordinator and Mike Eade the umpire in chief. Other directors include Barb Williams, Jana Brock, Dianna Laukkanen, Brandy Walton, Jason Vance, Rene Gutierrez, Kerry Anderson and George Rounis.

Divisions for players in minor baseball begin with t-ball for youngsters born 2009-10, with a registration fee of $90. Then comes the rookie division for 2008 players at $100. Players born in 2006-07 play in the tadpole league with a cost of $135 and those born 2004-05 are in the mosquito division with a $175 fee. Peewee league registration is $180 for those born 2002-03, while the bantam league is $190 for players born 2000-01, as is the midget division involving the age group of those born 1997-99. A family discount of 50 per cent is given to the third (or more) child registered and financial assistance is available for those that require it.

In-person registration can be done this Saturday and Sunday, (March 7-8), from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. both days at Kirby’s Source for Sports on Bowen Road. Otherwise, online registration forms are available at www.baseballnanaimo.com. Registrations must be received by March 15 in order to avoid possible waitlist and late fee.

Whatever your sport, a reminder in closing to play your hardest, play fair, and show good sportsmanship.
