SOUTH SURREY — The inaugural Champions of the Crescent stand-up paddleboard race raised a cool $128,000 for charity.
Funds generated at the event, held Sunday (July 24) at Blackie Spit Park in South Surrey, will go toward funding a new youth mental-health facility called CAPSU, scheduled to open in 2017 at Surrey Hospital & Outpatient Centre.
More than 200 paddlers took to the waters for competitive and corporate races.
Danny Ching (PICTURED) won the men’s 10K race in a time of 41 minutes, 16 seconds, with Norm Hann placing second with a time of 41:52.
In the women’s 10K race, Lina Augaitis won in 46:14, while second-place finisher Hannah Hill crossed the finish line at 47:39.

“We’re so thrilled that so many people joined us (on Sunday) to raise money for such an important cause,” said Jane Adams, president of Surrey Hospital & Outpatient Centre Foundation.
“This race (has) helped towards reaching our goal of equipping Canada’s most progressive children’s mental health unit, the Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit. Our amazing participants and our community sponsors have made an incredible contribution towards the lives of so many children and families.”
