Unhappy with the way last season ended, the Silver Stars jumpstarted the 2014 scheduled by grounding Kal Tire 4-2 in Okanagan Men’s 50+ Soccer League action Thursday night at MacDonald Park.

John Matejicka and Wolfgang Bopp each recorded two goals for the Stars, who lost 1-0 to the Tiremen at the end of last year. Bopp scored once on a penalty kick, awarded when Matejicka was taken down by keeper Pete (The Heat) Richter.

Striker Tom Ouchi had a handful of glorious chances for Kal Tire and scored twice. The Stars got quality showings from Steve Coombes, Nigel Clack and Ken Barker.

Meanwhile, the Vernon Super 8 Women’s League is looking for new players regardless of skill level.

Super 8 is for everyone,” said organizer Kelly Megyesi. “The smaller field and great sportsmanship allows us to reduce player injury and provide lots of touches.”

The season goes Thursday nights until June 23 and again Sept. 8-29.Contact ehaugust@gmail.com.
