Stealth earn first home victory at Langley Events Centre

Non-traditional Friday night practice helped prepare Langley-based lacrosse team for next night’s battle.

Typically, on Friday before a Saturday game, the Langley-based Stealth have an intense practice.

But, yesterday the team opted for a less traditional meeting in hopes of a changed mindset, explained captain Curtis Hodgson.

“We needed to change it up, we wanted to do something different and luckily we are with an organization that is open-minded and flexible,” Hodgson said.

“I think the guys bought into it and it was just a good team experience. I don’t want to get into it too much, but it was about focusing on ourselves and re-energizing the group and I think it worked well for us tonight,” he said following the victory.

The Stealth came out trailing the defending champions for the first 30 minutes of the game.

But nearly six minutes into the third quarter, Corey Small scored and Vancouver would not look back on the scoresheet after that.

Logan Schuss and Small led the offensive charge for Vancouver, both scoring two goals and three assists.

Joel McCready, James Rahe, and goaltender Tye Belanger all had three points in the victory.

Belanger started his fifth straight game making 55 saves, including 20 in the final 15 minutes.

“I’m still numb after that game, but it is so nice to get that win for the fans and celebrate in front of the home crowd,” said Belanger, the game’s first star.

“You get in the zone, you get in a rhythm, you know, I just got in front of the ball and the first thing I was thinking was sending it up the floor.

“I got three assists but I absolutely should have gone one (goal) and three (assists) tonight, but I missed the empty net. Honestly though, I am just glad we got our fourth win of the season.”

The Stealth (4-6) will be on the road next week, when they visit the Colorado Mammoth on Sunday, March 12.

They are  back home on Friday, March 17, when they host the Buffalo Bandits on a rare Friday home game.

Tickets are available at the Langley Events Centre Box Office at 604-882-8800, or Ticket Rocket.co.
