Steam nets big win in third overtime against Osoyoos in KIJHL playoffs

Osoyoos Coyotes have 2-1 series lead on Summerland Steam in KIJHL playoffs

Cole Woodliffe’s marker at 11:23 of the third overtime period lifted the Summerland Steam 3-2 over the Osoyoos Coyotes.

Woodliffe’s tally came on the power play after Colten Braid was called for hooking and cut the Coyotes lead in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs series to 2-1.

After a scoreless first period, Jackson Glimpel gave the Coyotes the first lead of the game at 18:34 of the second. Paulsen Lautard tied the game at 17:56 on a feed by Daylan Robertson then put the Steam ahead at 2:03.

The Coyotes counted in the third period on the power play on a goal by Colin Bell. Brent Soles made 47 saves in the loss, while Brett Huber made 54 for the Steam.

The Coyotes took the opening game of the series 4-2, then won Game 2, 8-2 at the Osoyoos Sun Bowl. It was a tough outing for Steam goalie Brett Huber, who was pulled in favor of Spencer Huff after allowing six goals on 29 shots. Huff allowed two goals on 13 shots. Scoring for the Coyotes were Troy Maclise with two, Jackson Glimpel, Ryan Roseboom, Luc Gradisar, Colten Braid, Rainer Glimpel and Tyler Ostrom. Aaron Azevedo racked up four assists, while Gradisar, Colin Bell and Nolan Zweep each collected two assists. Brett Soles made 24 saves for the win. Scoring for the Steam were Paulsen Lautard and Daylan Robertson. Cole Woodliffe had two assists.

Game 4 is Saturday at the Summerland Arena at 7:30 p.m.

Last week, members of the Steam were recognized for outstanding efforts over the season. For the second consecutive year, coach John DePourcq was named coach of the year.

Jack Mills was named rookie of the year for the Okanagan Division. In 50 regular season game, Mills scored 27 goals and had 29 assists for 56 points. He added 70 penalty minutes to his totals.

Braden Eliuk was named most sportsmanlike player in the Okanagan Division, with just eight penalty minutes during the regular season. He also scored three goals and had 22 assists. Huber was named top goalie in the Okanagan Division as he won 18 of the 31 games he played with three shutouts to go with a 2.28 goals against average and .916 save percentage.

In other KIJHL playoff action, the Kamloops Storm lead the 100 Mile House Wranglers 3-0 after earning a 3-2 win Thursday. In the Kootenay Conference, the Fernie Ghostriders lead the Kimberley Dynamiters 2-1. Penticton’s Eric Buckley has three goals and five points in eight games.The Beaver Valley Nitehawks have a 3-0 lead on the Castlegar Rebels.
