Steam slowed by Eagles, lose in double OT

Spencer Huff made 32 saves in Steam loss to Sicamous

The Summerland Steam lost 4-3 in Sicamous to the Eagles in double overtime.

Riley Cardinal put the dagger in the Steam as he beat Spencer Huff at 3:07. The Eagles had opened the scoring, then the Steam struck back with goals by Braden Eliuk and Michael McEachern on the power play. Cole Woodliffe, then forced overtime as he scored the equalizer with 5:54 remaining in the third period. The Steam went two-for five on the man advantage, while killing off all four Eagles power plays. Huff finished with 32 saves in the loss.

The Steam started their week early with a visit to the Kelowna Chiefs, falling 5-3. Summerland played a good team game, but could not contain Kelowna’s two best players, Nick Josephs and Braeden Cyra. Josephs picked up three points and Cyra racked up five . Cole Woodliffe, Braden Eliuk and Cody Egilson replied for the Steam, while Spencer Huff made 32 saves. The Steam then hosted the North Okanagan Knights on Friday night. After beating them 7-1 on Jan. 11, Summerland knew the Knights would come back hard, and they did. It was an exciting game that saw North Okanagan tie the game at three late in the third period before Paulsen Lautard scored the overtime winner, his second of the game, in double overtime with just 1:06 to play. Michael McEachern and Woodliffe also tallied for the Steam. Spencer Huff picked up the victory with 30 saves, while Josh Shank stopped 59 for the Knights in a losing effort.

In their third and final game of the week, the Steam faced the Osoyoos Coyotes at the Oliver Arena on Sunday afternoon. It was a fast-paced, physical hockey game that saw the score remain close until the Steam got into penalty trouble in the third. The Coyotes scored four third period goals, including three in the final six minutes for a 6-1 win. Woodliffe scored the only goal for the Steam, while Luc Gradisar chipped in a hat trick for the ‘Yotes. Colten Braid, Brett Jewell and Colin Bell scored for Osoyoos while Lawrence Langan stopped 35 shots in the victory. Spencer Huff took the loss despite an incredible performance facing 49 shots.

The Steam visits North Okanagan Friday and Sunday are in Kelowna before hosting Osoyoos Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
