Steam swept by Coyotes in weekend series

Osoyoos Coyotes get best of Summerland Steam over weekend

  • Dec. 30, 2014 10:00 a.m.

It was an extremely entertaining weekend of games between the Summerland Steam and the Osoyoos Coyotes. They played one very clean hockey game, and one not so clean game that saw the Coyotes come out on the winning end of both, 3-2 and 4-3 in overtime. Saturday night saw the ‘Yotes go up 2-0 on goals from Daniel Stone and Rory Neary before the Steam clawed back to tie it at two in the third thanks to tallies from Wyatt Gale and Jack Mills. A controversial penalty call with 1:30 to play sent Osoyoos to a late power-play where Troy Maclise scored the winner with just 11 seconds to play. Making 35 saves each, Brett Soles earned the win for Osoyoos while Brett Huber took the loss for Summerland.

The two teams got together again on Sunday for a rematch in Summerland, with Osoyoos coming from behind to pull out a 4-3 win. The overtime goal, scored by Kaleden native Jackson Dematos, was as controversial as the night before. It could have been called a kicking motion or goaltender interference on Steam goaltender Spencer Huff. It was called neither, and stood as the winner in a chippy, but very entertaining game. Jarrett Malchow scored twice for Summerland while Nick Gnazdowsky got the other. Rainer Glimpel notched two for the ‘Yotes while captain Maclise finished with a goal and an assist. The two teams will meet again on Jan. 18 in Oliver at 1:35 p.m.
