The Smithers Steelheads dropped a close game against the Whitehorse Huskies in their first game at the Coy Cup in Terrace.
Tuesday’s matchup was a close, physical game that, for the most part, saw the Steelheads chasing the score.
The Steelheads lost the lead when a Huskies skater went up the middle and tied it at two. Whitehorse took the lead with a shot from the right side that made it 3-2. They extended the lead with a second on the clock to make it 4-2 by the end of the first period.
Smithers came back in the second to tie it at four. It was a penalty-filled frame, with Whitehorse called four times and Smithers sitting for two minutes or less three times. All three Smithers penalties were for roughing.
The Huskies dominated the third, according to Terrace reporter Jackie Lieuwen. But Smithers did not give up, with Brendan deVries scoring after a scramble in front of the Whitehorse goaltender to make it 6-5. It was CIHL MVP deVries’ fourth goal of the game, but it was not enough and that was the final score.
Smithers today takes on Fort St. John, who tied the host Terrace River Kings last night.
