The Sooke Storm Boys Basketball Club lost the first game of the community season to the Belmont Westshore Dogs on April 28 at Edward Milne Community School.
The Westshore Dogs held a strong lead throughout the game, claiming a final score of 48-88.
“We did poorly defending the pick and roll, and we’ll work on that in practice,” said coach Trevor Bligh. “We gave up 30 easy points.”
The game was the first time the young athletes played on a team together. Each player currently belongs to different teams in the Sooke Basketball Club men’s league.
Bligh said he is happy with the team’s performance despite a loss, as the Westshore Dogs are a community team that draws from 20,000 people in Langford.
He coaches a junior team for the community league every so often when he has young players who exhibit talent and enthusiasm.
“Some of the young juniors have good potential to them and the seniors are starting to assert themselves.”
The community basketball season is not affiliated with schools, thus giving young players the opportunity to play an addition 10 games a year without breaking the B.C. school sports rules of seasons of play.
