The Virtual Island Race Series continued with the Cedar 12k race. For this event, runners had to come up with a creative route that included an iconic local landmark. The 5th Street Bridge, the Blooming Barn and the Merville Hall were among the favourites selected.
More than 250 runners participated in the event, including 60-plus from the Comox Valley. Local runners once again posted some strong results.
Derek Vinge was again the top dog, posting the fastest time of 45:10. Close behind was Comox Valley Road Runners secretary Johnathan MacDonald, who came second by running 45:45. Jordan Brietzke placed fourth in 46:48, with CVRR president Rob Kelly taking fifth in 47:24. Rounding out the coveted top 10 were Derek Brenchley, sixth in 47:46, and Keith Wakelin, 10th in 49:32.
On the women’s side, Colleen Schmidt took third place in a time of 50:29. She was followed by Andrea Wilson in fourth with a time of 51:25. Kim Coscia was seventh in 53:19, and Maddie Naswell ninth in 54:55.
The event included a photo contest that illustrated local landmark. Lance Blomgren and Fiona McQuillan of the Valley each earned notable mentions for their photos.
The CVRR 5k Clinic is ongoing. The celebratory 5k Fun Run is the week of March 20-27.
“This is a great chance to get out and get active,” a news release states.
