Kelowna’s Megan Osland tuned up for her fourth season of U.S. collegiate golf with an impressive performance last week at the Canadian women’s amateur golf championship in Woodstock, Ont.
The 21-year-old member of the San Jose State golf team had her best ever finish at the national championship, placing eighth overall with a four-day score of 1-under par 283.
Osland was fourth among all Canadian players—the other three being members of Canada’s national team, including tournament winner Augusta James and Brooke Henderson, the No. 2 ranked amateur in the world.
After opening up with a bogey free 68, Osland followed up with rounds of 73-72-70, which included a spectacular finish on the 72nd and final hole, as she drained a 30-foot uphill putt for a birdie.
Osland, who posted the best score of all B.C. players at the tournament, is pleased with how her game has progressed this summer.
“Heading into this tournament I was having some swing issues, but I was able to work with my swing coach Sean Richardson since I got back from the B.C. Amateur and I was able to straighten those issues out,” Osland said. “For the most part I was hitting the ball well at this tournament. Right now I’m feeling good about how I’ve been playing, but as a golfer I’m always working on something and there’s always something to improve.”
Heading into her senior year, Osland will serve as the team captain at San Jose State as the Spartans prepare for the 2014-15 competitive season.
“My team and I will be working towards another spot in the NCAA national championship this year like we did in 2013,” Osland said.
Osland is majoring in Recreation Management at SJSU.
Bradley 4th at seniors…
The Kelowna Golf and Country Club’s Norm Bradley turned in a fourth-place showing at the B.C. Senior Men’s Golf Championship last week at the Christina Lake Golf Club.
Bradley’s three-day score of 2-under par 214 was just three shots back of winner Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver.
Bradley opened up with an even par 72, then followed with rounds of 68 and a 74 on Thursday.
KGCC’s David Cameron placed 32nd overall with a 226 total (76-73-77), while Wayne Schaefer of Kelowna was 49th at 230.
KGCC’s Brock Waldron was 65th, while Greg Walker tied for 75th place.
